A colorless, transparent liquid with a strong odor. Water decomposition into hydrogen chloride and boric acid, and release a lot of heat, in the wet air due to hydrolysis and the generation of smoke. Boron trichloride has strong reaction ability, can form a variety of coordination compounds, has high thermodynamic stability, but under the action of discharge, it will decompose into low cost boron chloride. In the atmosphere, boron trichloride heating can react with glass, ceramics, but also can react with many organic compounds to form various organoborate compounds.


Can be used to manufacture high purity boron, catalyst for organic synthesis, silicate decomposition flux, can be borated on steel. It can also be used to make boron nitride and borane compounds.

It is mainly used in diffusion, ion implantation, dry etching and other processes for silicon semiconductor devices and integrated circuits in electronics industry.
