Description

A brown-red gas. At room temperature (0~21.5℃), nitrogen dioxide and nitrogen tetroxide coexist. Toxic and irritating. Dissolved in concentrated nitric acid to form fuming nitric acid. It can be combined to form nitrous oxide. It reacts with water to form nitric acid and nitric oxide. It reacts with a base to form a nitrate. Can react violently with many organic compounds.

Application

Nitrogen dioxide is used as an oxidant in chemical reactions and rocket fuel.

Used as a catalyst in the production of sulfuric acid by the nitroso process.

It can be used industrially to make nitric acid.
